The Shema and the Table
Deuteronomy 6:1–25 -- "Therefore hear, O Israel, and be careful to observe it, that it may be well with you, and that you may multiply greatly as the Lord God of your fathers has promised you—‘a land flowing with milk and honey.’ “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one! You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. “And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up."
The one Lord who owns Israel completely calls for a total love that saturates every dimension of personal and family life — a love transmitted not by argument but by the habitual rhythms of households that remember what God has done.
Key Scripture Passages
- Genesis 2:24 — “one flesh”: the same Hebrew word the Shema uses for God’s own “one,” read first through the union it describes in marriage.
- Exodus 23:20–21 — the Angel who bears God’s own Name: textual room, already present in Moses’ own day, for more inside the LORD’s oneness than a bare headcount.
- 1 Corinthians 8:4–6 — Paul’s own confession of the Shema, naming both the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ as its content.

Dangers to Avoid
- Making “one” a Trinity-proof. Deuteronomy 6:4’s “one” is first a covenantal claim — this God, and no other, is uniquely yours — not a philosophical argument about God’s inner complexity. The New Testament’s Trinitarian reading is real, but it rests on the whole of Scripture, not on a single Hebrew word.
- Turning household teaching into a checklist. Deuteronomy 6:6–9 puts the words on the heart before it ever mentions a hand or a doorpost. Teaching that starts with technique rather than genuine belief produces performance, not faith — and performance is not what the passage asks for.
Gospel Foundation
None of us has loved God with all of anything — not this week, not ever. The Shema’s command remains total; our obedience to it never has been. But the same passage that commands total love also promises it: God circumcises the heart he commands us to love him with, pours his love into us by his Spirit, and — in Christ — credits us with the very obedience the command was always asking for.
Already true:
- You are loved before you are commanded to love (Deut. 7:7–8).
- Christ has loved God with the totality the Shema demands, in your place (Deut. 6:25).
- The Spirit has already begun writing this command on your heart (Jer. 31:33; Ezek. 36:26).
Closing
Every household that takes this passage seriously ends up with some version of an ordinary table — the story told again and again. The church was given one too: “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” Whatever your Tuesday dinner table talks about, the Lord’s Table has already told you what matters most.
