Philippians 3:20 -- "For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ."

Study Outline & Summary

What has God given me to love here, and where does my citizenship rest?

God has given believers a people and a place to love, and a name in Christ that governs that love. Heaven’s citizenship is already ours. It orders a real earthly belonging. The two are not rivals.

Key Scripture Passages

  1. Philippians 3:17–21 — The believer’s citizenship is already in heaven, and waits from there for the Savior. Verses 18–19 name enemies of the cross, not a ban on loving a people or a place.
  2. Matthew 22:15–22 — The coin bears Caesar’s image and goes back to him. The person bears God’s image and belongs to God.
  3. Philippians 1:27 — Live as citizens worthy of the gospel. The gospel supplies the standard.
  4. Acts 17:24–28 — From one blood God made every nation and fixed the times and boundaries of its life, so that people might seek Him in their work, their households, and the common life of their towns. No nation is a sacred exception.
  5. Jeremiah 29:4–7 — Even to captives God assigns houses, gardens, marriages, children, and increase, and then the peace of the city. Captivity does not cancel the commission.
  6. Romans 13:1–7 and 1 Peter 2:13–17 — Honor the office, pay what is due, and keep a clear conscience. That does not baptize every policy.
  7. Hebrews 13:14 — We anticipate the city God has prepared, where the vanity of our work ends and the vocation is restored.
  8. Revelation 7:9 — Every nation, tribe, people, and tongue remains before the Lamb. Glory does not erase the peoples, and no nation sits on that throne.
  9. Romans 11:1, 17–18, 29 — God has not cast off His people. The grafted share the root and do not boast. The gifts and the calling stand.
  10. Colossians 1:13 and John 18:36 — We have already been transferred into the kingdom of the Son, and that kingdom is not from this world’s throne.
  11. Romans 15:8–9 — Christ confirms the promises to Israel, and that faithfulness is how mercy reaches the nations.
  12. Ephesians 2:14–16, 1 Peter 2:9–10, Galatians 3:28–29 — The church is one new humanity, with a vocation to proclaim. It does not receive Israel’s identity, land, or people.
  13. Romans 15:7 — Receive one another, as Christ received you.

Dangers to Avoid

  • Heaven as a holding pattern. Citizenship in heaven tells us whose name we carry, and it leaves the work, the household, and the life of the town as the very things God gave us to do.
  • A nation taking Israel’s name. God has kept Israel as His own. No other nation inherits that calling, and the church does not lend it to a country’s identity.
  • A nation wearing the kingdom’s crown. The kingdom of the Son is already owned, and it does not arise from an earthly throne.
  • Philippians 3:19 read as a ban on citizenship. The contrast is the cross, the belly, and shame. Earthly things become the enemy when they become our god.
  • The church as the new Israel. Paul calls the church one new man. Peter gives titles for a vocation. He does not say, “You are Israel.”
